A cold February day. More than 1000 people gathered in Quakenbrück — not for a concert, but for a demonstration.
Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning played three songs as part of it. There was a stage, but no real separation — just music, voices, and a moment that felt larger than itself.
And somewhere between “I can’t get no shelter” and “love is just a kiss away,” the sun came out.
Later this year, Lower Saxony will hold local elections. The possibility of a significant shift to the right is real. This is not about supporting a specific party — but about standing for democratic values and participation, even in a deeply polarised world.
Ein kalter Februartag. Mehr als 1000 Menschen versammelten sich in Quakenbrück — nicht für ein Konzert, sondern für eine Demonstration.
Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning spielten drei Songs im Rahmen der Veranstaltung. Es gab eine Bühne, aber keine wirkliche Distanz — nur Musik, Stimmen und ein Moment, der größer war als alles andere.
Irgendwo zwischen „I can’t get no shelter“ und „love is just a kiss away“ kam die Sonne heraus.
Im September stehen in Niedersachsen Kommunalwahlen an. Die Möglichkeit eines deutlichen Rechtsrucks ist real. Es geht dabei nicht um die Unterstützung einer bestimmten Partei, sondern um demokratische Werte und Beteiligung — auch in einer zunehmend polarisierten Welt.

It was a cold February day in Quakenbrück.
More than 1000 people gathered on the market square — not for a concert, but for a demonstration. A response to what had been building for months across the country.
There were many speakers. Different voices, different backgrounds — but a shared tone: concern, clarity, and the feeling that something had to be said out loud.
We were asked to play.
The Performance
Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning played three songs as part of the event. There was a stage, but no real distance between band and crowd — just a shared space for a short moment in the afternoon.

No set, no show in the usual sense — just three songs placed into a situation that was not about music, but about presence.

The last song felt different that day.
“I can’t get no shelter.”
“Love, it’s just a kiss away.”
Lines everyone knows. Lines that suddenly carried a different weight when played in that context, in that place, in front of that crowd.
And as we played, the sun came out.
Context
Later this year, Lower Saxony will hold local elections. The possibility of a significant shift to the right is real.
This is not about supporting a specific party. It is about something more basic — participation, responsibility, and the idea that democratic values are worth standing up for.
That is not always easy in a polarised environment. But it should still be possible.
Afterwards
It was not a concert in the usual sense.
But it was one of those moments where music finds its place again — not as entertainment, but as part of something larger.

Es war ein kalter Februartag in Quakenbrück.
Mehr als 1000 Menschen versammelten sich auf dem Marktplatz — nicht für ein Konzert, sondern für eine Demonstration. Eine Reaktion auf das, was sich seit Monaten im ganzen Land aufgebaut hatte.
Es gab viele Rednerinnen und Redner. Unterschiedliche Stimmen, unterschiedliche Hintergründe — aber ein gemeinsamer Ton: Sorge, Klarheit und das Gefühl, dass jetzt etwas ausgesprochen werden musste.
Wir wurden gebeten zu spielen.
Der Auftritt
Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning spielten drei Songs im Rahmen der Veranstaltung. Es gab eine Bühne, aber keine wirkliche Distanz zwischen Band und Publikum — nur ein gemeinsamer Moment an diesem Nachmittag.

Kein Set, keine Show im klassischen Sinne — nur drei Songs in einer Situation, in der es nicht um Musik ging, sondern um Präsenz.

Der letzte Song fühlte sich an diesem Tag anders an.
„I can’t get no shelter.“
„Love, it’s just a kiss away.“
Zeilen, die jeder kennt. Zeilen, die in diesem Moment, an diesem Ort, vor diesem Publikum eine andere Bedeutung bekamen.
Und während wir spielten, kam die Sonne heraus.
Kontext
Im September stehen in Niedersachsen Kommunalwahlen an. Die Möglichkeit eines deutlichen Rechtsrucks ist real.
Es geht dabei nicht um die Unterstützung einer bestimmten Partei. Es geht um etwas Grundlegenderes — Beteiligung, Verantwortung und die Frage, ob demokratische Werte verteidigt werden.
Das ist in einer polarisierten Welt nicht selbstverständlich. Aber es sollte möglich bleiben.
Danach
Es war kein Konzert im klassischen Sinne.
Aber es war einer dieser Momente, in denen Musik wieder ihren Platz findet — nicht als Unterhaltung, sondern als Teil von etwas Größerem.
